A Dubai boy, Shamil Kareem an Indian origin born candidate, who has been selected in the top 100 finalist regional list of Google Science Fair contest.

Shamil is a student of class 11th studying in Indian High School of Dubai, who has been selected one among the thousand of countries filed from India. He stated, “The winners list on GoogleScienceFair.com shows I am the only one from the UAE to make it to the 100 shortlist.”

The Project

He has been selected for his project to minimise power wastage and make street lights smarter. Elaborately, the base of his project is, if a person or car passes by a street then the street light will automatically sense it and dim or brighten the light accordingly. This will save the energy and electricity.

“Once the shadow is sensed, the next street light brightens up for approaching the road user while the previous one dims down. For safety reasons, you cannot have the street lights off and then suddenly come on- as in the corridors in buildings- so the solution is to make them smarter by brightening and dimming where and when appropriate,” stated Shamil.

This idea, according to him is inspired by his father as it came when he was sitting in a park with his father and his father pointed the fact of wastage of electricity by all time brighten street lights.

According to Shamil, the project would be around 63% cheaper than infrared-based sensors as it would only need photo-resistors, cables and micro-controller to fit to existing street lights in developing countries.

The list of top 20 global finalists are expected to be announced soon this month.
