According to the Engineering faculty on Wednesday, Twelve out of the 16 of the Engineering and Technology Departments in Jadavpur University established domicile policy in undergraduate courses.

According to the domicile policy, if approved, a certain percentage of seats would be reserved for “home students.”

“We needed the feedback from departments on the domicile issue. The boards of around 12 departments gave their feedback on Tuesday and most of them are positive,” said Chiranjib Bhattacharya, Dean of the engineering faculty.

A senior teacher at the mechanical engineering department confirmed that “home students’ refers to as the West Bengal residents.

The Engineering faculty has been awaiting the proposals by the remaining four departments for the faculty council meeting will make the final decision.

The Executive Council, the highest decision-making council, will fix the final percentage of quota seats.

“It is mainly coming from the faculty level, particularly in the context that education in the state is highly subsidized,” Mr. Bhattacharya said.

He further added that the state government will provide the cheapest tuition fee to the students of ₹2000.

The Council initially thought that the policy will be affected by the ‘Institute of Eminence’ tag given by the central government in 2018, wherein the institute will receive financial assistance of ₹1000 crore for five years.

He further informed that the Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur, and Anna University, Chennai have also adopted the domicile policy.
