Jadavpur University’s Faculty Council of Engineering and Technology (FET) on Thursday suggested that 90% of the undergraduate seats should be reserved for general students under the domicile quota.

It has been reported that if that’s approved, 90% of seats would be reserved for  “home students”, that refers to permanent residents of West Bengal.

“The FET has recommended the implementation of domicile policy. Now, the decision will be forwarded to the Executive Council (EC),” said Chiranjib Bhattacharya, Dean of the engineering faculty.

The decision for approval will be obtained by EC, which is the decision-making body.

The decision, being a major change in policy, will be further sent to West Bengal’s Higher Education Council, with their successful approval, the policy shall be implemented.

Out of the 16 engineering and technology departments, over 13 of them have agreed for the implementation of this proposal.

“Power engineering and electronics and telecommunication opined that the current system should continue, while the computer science and engineering department was divided in its opinion. But ultimately in the faculty council, the resolution was adopted unanimously,” he added.
