Being one of the toughest engineering entrance examinations in the country, JEE Main requires a thorough preparation! And if you want to prepare in the right manner you must follow a sequence that can help you get to a level where you can clear this examination with confidence!!JEE Main requires a thorough preparation! And if you want to prepare in the right manner you must follow a sequence that can help you get to a level where you can clear this examination with confidence!!

An allover thought out approach is very important to clear JEE Main. For this, you must prepare important topics and understand the concepts, and after giving enough time for preparation you must give an equal amount of time to test yourself on the same via different sample papers and mock tests.

You can follow this JEE Main blog page for more tips and tricks as well as updates regarding this prestigious examination.

We will be providing section-wise preparation tips and will also be suggesting a few books to prepare from, with this we will take a brief look at the different sections that test the skill-set of the candidates along with section-wise:

  • Preparation tips and tricks
  • Resources (Online and offline)

For devising your preparation technique, let’s start simplifying things…

JEE is divided into 3 sections having your beloved PCM. Taking one section at a time.

Let’s start decoding Physics

Analyzing this year’s exam, Physics was considered to be moderate in difficulty and length, with most finding it easier than the last year. Students encountered more calculative questions than theory-based.

The weightage of marks inclined towards the 12th standard syllabus with 19 questions asked from the total pack, while 11 questions were picked from the 11th standard syllabus. The paper had 11 questions from Mechanics, 8 questions from Electrodynamics, 3 questions from Thermodynamics and Kinetic Theory, 2 from Optics and Wave Optics – which was a surprise for most – and 6 questions from Modern Physics and Nuclear Physics.

You can follow D.C.Pandey (all volumes) and H.C.Verma which have been consistently recommended by successful candidates. You can also follow I.E.Irodov only if you are interested in more, but it is not required for JEE Main.

Topics like Optics, Electricity and Magnetism are highly scoring, so give them good time. Topics requiring extra attention constitute Kinematics and Particle dynamics.

Mechanics and Electricity and Magnetism are the most important topics in terms of the number of questions asked in previous years’ JEE papers. Also, there were many topics which were a part of previous year’s papers which are Mechanics, Electricity and Magnetism (Equal importance), Modern Physics, Optics, Heat, Thermodynamics, Waves and Sound, Measurement and errors.

Moving on to Chemistry

Analyzing this year’s exam, Chemistry was considered the easiest of all three papers, with a difficulty curve similar to last year. Experts believe that the questions asked this year were more theoretical than calculative, making it the quickest subject to solve and thus strategically a part to execute violently. The weightage of marks tilted towards the 12th standard syllabus, with 17 questions chosen from it and the remaining 13 chosen from the 11th standard syllabus. Constitutionally, the paper had 8 questions from Organic Chemistry, 11 from Inorganic Chemistry and 11 from Physical Chemistry.

You can follow Organic -Advanced Problems in Organic Chemistry by M.S. Chauhan, Physical- Concepts of physical chemistry by P. Bahadur, Inorganic- NCERT (Class 11 and 12).

It is important to practice Organic Chemistry while improving topics like Stereochemistry, GOC (General Organic Chemistry) and Functional Group Analysis which are less important but unpredictable.

Finally, Mathematics

Analyzing this year’s exam, Mathematics was adhered as the most difficult of all subjects, due to its lengthiness, despite being comparatively easier than last year. The paper contained 15 questions from Algebra, 6 from Calculus, 3 from Trigonometry, 3 from Conics and 3 from Vector Algebra.

Book Recommended: M.L. Khanna

Devise strategy around the topics like Vectors and 3D, Probability, Indefinite integration, Complex numbers, and Definite integral as they require of attention. Differential calculus is another important topic, for which one should specialize in solving roots of equations with the utilization of Rolle’s and Lagrange’s theorems.

One also needs to excel in problems based on Permutation Combination and Probability, as they are essential topics in Algebra. Simplify Integral calculus via using some basic varieties of integral functions. You should follow this mantra for every question, as it has helped everyone facing tough mathematics questions – Convert the tougher parts to basic forms, which would help in simplification.

Finally, practice mathematics as much as you can while taking a cue from previous years’ JEE papers.

Let’s have a look at the cut off trend

S. No. Category 2017 2016 2015 2014
1 General 81 100 105 115
2 OBC-NCL 49 70 70 74
3 SC 32 52 50 53
4 ST 27 48 44 47

I suggest the following books and if you have been following them, well and good, else I recommend you to download their electronic edition and check whether the will be helpful to you or not. I would recommend you to save money by looking at free study material, prepared by experts after careful research and paper analysis, which might be sufficient for a major part of your exam preparation, for which I will be putting up some website where you will find e-books to download.

The most important book is your coaching notes and the notes that you prepared yourself during studying.

Resources to find JEE Mains mock test and sample papers

I suggest you should at least join a test series (some of them are even free to join), as they provide the best concept building.

With the test series you know what needs to be strengthened and you can practice questions as much as you can.

Mock test and sample papers will give you good preparation and will boost your confidence. Try to practice as much as possible without thinking too much about the outcome.

You can follow test series that available online for inexpensive prices like jeemainonline.in/test series/ or freeiitcoaching.com.

Also, you must understand the best thing about online learning is that it is convenient, interactive, direct, less time consuming, helping you visualize and crisp to the point.
