JEE Mains 2019, conducted on 9th and 10th January, the cut-off for this year could be analyzed by comparing those of previous years.

There are three major factors to be taken care while calculating cut-offs of any competitive exams are:

  • Number of Candidates appearing for the exams
    • If the number is low, the cut-off tends to increase
    • If the number is high, the cut-off tends to go low
  • The difficulty level of the questions
    • If very difficult questions are asked, the cut-off tends to be low
    • If the question paper is easy, the cut-off tends to go high
  • Total number of seats available
    • If the seats available are less, the cut-off tends to go high
    • If the seats are more than the candidates appearing, the cut-off tends to decrease.

JEE Main 2019: Expected qualifying marks

• General: 70 marks to 80 marks.

• OBC-NCL: 43 marks to 50 marks.

• SC: 27 marks to 30 marks.

• ST: 22 marks to 26 marks.

In order to get admitted to a good college, the candidate is required to not just to qualify but also attain good marks.

To analyze the cut-off for this year, the previous year’s cut-offs can be compared in order to take the idea for this year.

Year

2018 • General: 74

• OBC-NCL: 45

• SC: 29

• ST: 24

• PwD: – 35

2017 • General: 81

2016 • General: 100

• OBC-NCL: 70

• SC: 53

• ST: 48

2015 • General: 105

• SC: 50

• ST: 44

2014 • General: 115

• OBC-NCL: 74

• SC: 53

• ST: 47

This table could be taken into consideration for taking an idea of this year’s cut-off.

It can be observed that for the General category, the cut-off for qualifying the exam is decreasing every year from 115 in 2014 to 74 in 2018, this pattern applies to all other categories as well, as shown above. Hence it is fair to expect a lower or more or less same cut-off this year.
