JNU (Jawaharlal Nehru University) is going to have a hostel for the students came from North Easter states to study in the university.

Rs. 11 crore have been released by the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) for the construction of 4-storied building. The infrastructure will be having 224 rooms being constructed for 424 NE students.

The rooms will be equally allotted 200 each to boys rooms and girls rooms and 24 rooms will be organised for physically handicapped students.

The area of the building is spread over one-and-a-half acres land and the construction work will begin soon as released in the official statement by the Ministry. The passing of tender is yet under process by Central Public Works Department (CPWD) as informed by DoNER Minister Jitendra Singh.

Meanwhile, the hostel facility for girl students studying in Delhi University coming from the North Eastern background is also under land acquisition process. The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has released Rs. 2.5 crore for the construction. The hostel will be built in the area of 5 acre land.

Right now JNU provides 18 hostels for boys and girls in the university campus and one complex accommodating married students. Every student studying in JNU is not eligible to take the hostel facility. The students need to fill the application form and provide their rank in the merit lists on the basis of, which the hostel facility is provided.

Also, 22.5% hostel seats are reserved for SC/ST and Physically Handicapped. No student residing in Delhi is allowed to benefit from the hostel facility.
