Maharashtra government has raised an urge to increase the no. of seats in the medical institutes.
Chief Minister of the state Devendra Fadnavis has requested the Union Health Ministry to increase the Maharashtra quota for post-graduate and undergraduate medical seats.
Fadnavis has demanded 813 additional PG seats and 1740 additional UG seats for the state. He met minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan on Thursday with his demands and was assured of positive consideration of the proposal.
Meanwhile, there are in all 3160 UG seats and 2030 PG seats in the state. Officials said that the additional seats have been calculated to ensure that the number of seats left in the open category should be almost the same, which existed before the implementation of the 16% SEBC quota and the 10% EWS quota. Currently there is a 68% quota in the case and an additional 10%.
Officials also said that if the proposal comes through then the seats can be implemented from the next academic year itself. All the seats will be increased in the government and civic run medical colleges.
However, an official from the medical education department said that the state is planning to increase the seats over the next two years. “It may not be possible to increase the intake of one year. A meeting with the deans will be arranged in the coming week to understand the status of infrastructure in state and civic-run colleges. The report based on this meeting will be submitted to the central government, only then a decision to increase the seats can be taken,” said the official.
