Maharashtra students who fail board exams will not be marked ‘fail’ but as ‘candidates for skill development’

To end the stigma attached to students failing the board exams, the Maharashtra State board has decided to drop the ‘Fail’ word from the mark sheets of class X and XII with encouragement. The mark sheets will declare the student to be promoted and marked with ATKT (Allowed To Keep Term), eligible for ‘skill development programs’.

Every year 16 lakh students appear for the Maharashtra State Board Exams out of which 2.5 lakh fail every year. The number has been reduced by 1 lakh after ATKT and re-exams schemes were introduced.

As per the resolution issues by the Maharashtra government on Tuesday, the remarks will be reflected in the mark sheets of the students who appear for the SSC and HSC re-exams held in July-August 2016 and February-March 2017. In the class 10th re-exam results announced on Tuesday, 78,153 students will be promoted with ATKT and 24,332 students eligible for skill development programs.

Vinod Tawde, the State Education Minister said, “The move will remove discrimination against academically weak students. The failure tag frightens them as they lose out on a year and identified as a failure by society. A crime report shows that these students turn towards crime.”

The announcement was made last year but still, changes have been made in the mark sheets, even ‘ATKT’ students mark sheet carry ‘FAIL’ remark on them.

Nanda Kumar, Principal Secretary of the Department said, “The implementation was delayed as the government was working on providing skill development programs. We have spoken to several polytechnics which will start the programs from this year.”

The students can also appear for a re-exam if they don’t want to opt for skill development programs. “They can go for the supplementary exam or appear for the February-March Exams, it’s up to the students,” said Kumar.
