Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal has established a six-month certificate course on alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselling, scheduled to be commenced from March 23, 2019, to be practiced under the recently launched Center for Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances. It has been reported that every Saturday, one class will be conducted. For being eligible to enroll in the certification, the candidate must hold a bachelor’s degree.
The Centre is headed under Dr. G Shreekumar Menon said that this will be a Kickstarter to make people aware of the drug abuse and alcohol. He added, “The course will help to deepen the understanding of substance use disorders, to facilitate the development of addiction counseling competencies that are associated with positive treatment outcomes, providing substance abuse evaluation, education and treatment services”.
The listed objectives of the course laid down by the Academy are:
- Develop an understanding of the physical, psychological and social effects of Narcotics and Psychotropic drugs on the user and society
- Familiarization with the range of drug rehabilitation treatment services available
- Acquire basic skills and knowledge to treat alcohol and drug use disorders.
