Meghalaya plans to shut schools with enrolments below 10

The Meghalaya Government is planning of shutting schools with enrollments below 10 and withdrawing their funds in the development of some other educational facilities. As per the reports, 221 Meghalaya Upper and Lower Primary Schools have a single-digit enrollment of students.

The State Education Minister Lakmen Rymbui said on Thursday, “The education department will soon place a proposal before the state Cabinet for either closing down or withdrawing grant-in-aid to these schools.”

The minister said, the government bears 20 crores annual expenditure on these schools, which could be used for the development of other schools. However, the decision will be taken as per the guidelines of the Right to Education (RTE) Act. He further said, no student will be denied education.

The teachers of these schools will be redeployed as per their qualifications and experience in the educational institutions where there is a shortage of faculty.

He added, the reason for the low enrollment in these schools is the presence of a large number of schools in the area. The competition is making it hard for these schools to prosper.

Meghalaya is one of the most beautiful northeastern states led by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma. During British Rule, it was called ‘Scotland of the East’.
