The Union Cabinet has approved the establishment of 13 new central universities across 12 states in the country to be set up by the next three years under Central Universities Act 2009.

The Ministry of Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar also tweeted the decisions taken by the cabinet on January 16 stating:

  • Cabinet has given its approval for incurring an expenditure of ₹3,639.32 crore for the new 13 new central universities for recurring costs and creation of necessary infrastructure for completion of the campuses. The work will be completed in the period of 36 months.
  • The Cabinet has also given ex-post facto approval for an amount of ₹1474.65 crore being the amount spent over and above the earlier cabinet approval of ₹3000 crore for these central universities.
  • The New Central Universities in the states of Tamil Nadu, Bihar, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Orissa, Punjab, and Rajasthan would be set up in the newly opened two new universities in Jammu and Kashmir under the Central Universities Act 2009.
  • This would increase access to higher education and set exemplary standards for other universities to emulate. it will also help in minimizing the regional imbalances in educational facilities.

He also tweeted ” The Union Cabinet chaired by PM Narendra Modi today approved the Revised Cost of Estimates (RCE) for 13 new central universities.”
