On the occasion of the National Girl Child Day, the Union Human Resource Development Ministry tweeted ” Let us pledge to celebrate, educate, and nurture the girl child.” In order to provide facilities to the female candidates of the country, the MHRD offers various schemes to benefit the girl child.

The Government-aided Scholarships for Women are:

  • Pragati Scholarship

Under this scholarship, the MHRD provides 4000 scholarships every year. The Scholarship avails the girl candidates who belong to the families with an income of less than ₹6 lakh per annum. The Candidates are provided with the entire tuition fee or Rs 30,000 (whichever is less) and a stipend of Rs 2,000 per month for 10 months during their graduate course.

This Scholarship will only be availed to those female candidates who will secure admission onto colleges approved by AICTE based on their merit. Only one student from a family can avail this scholarship.   • Swami Vivekananda Scholarship

The Swami Vivekananda Scholarship for a single girl child provides financial assistance to the respective candidates for their full education including Ph.D. Also the families with twin girl children only and transgender students, the scholarship provides a fellowship of Rs 25,000 per month for the initial two years of their Ph.D.

For rest of the Ph.D. tenure, candidates will get Rs 28,000 per month. Additionally, the contingency of Rs 10,000 per annum for the first two and Rs 20,500 for remaining years are provided.

The Eligibility for the scholarship requires admission to the Ph.D. programme. Girl students should not be more than 40 years old. For candidates belonging to reserved categories, the upper age limit is 45 years. Interested candidates can apply for the scholarship at, http://ugc.ac.in/svsgc/.

  • Udaan Mentoring

The Udaan Mentorship was a project by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), it aims at enrolling maximum women candidates in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) specifically in the Indian engineering colleges. The CBSE provides free tutorials for students of class 11 and class 12 to crack engineering entrance exams including the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE).

Under this scholarship, the students are given tablets, virtual classes, motivational sessions, and service helpline to clear all study doubts. Female candidates studying at Navodya Vidyalayas, Kendriya Vidyalas, government schools or any CBSE recognized school can apply for the scholarship. Candidates must secure 70 percent or above in class 10 or equivalent and family income should not be more than Rs 6 lakh per annum.
