The National Council of Education Research and Training (NCERT) is going to conduct the National Achievement Survey (NAS) at schools across the country in November, 2021.

The Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said that the National Achievement Survey will be conducted at all government and private schools to assess the learning achievements of students.

The last achievement survey was conducted for Class 3, 5 and 8 in 2017 while for Class 10, the same was conducted in 2018. After that, no further NAS was held as schools were closed due to pandemic.

The announcement regarding NAS was made by Mr. Pradhan in response to a written question which was presented in a session of Lok Sabha by an opposition speaker.

The question mentioned that whether any study or survey is being conducted or not which can evaluate the quality of school education aross the country, especially during the phase of online learning.

The Education Minister in his response mentioned that NCERT has been conducting periodic national sample surveys to evaluate the learning achievements of children in class 3, 5, 8 and, 10.

The Last national achievement survey, held on 13th November 2017, was conducted across 701 districts covering all the 36 States and UTs with assessing over 22 lakh students from 1.10 lakh schools.

In the NAS 2017, students were assessed on the basis of their competency in various subjects and fields like english, mathematics, EVS, social sciences, regional language, and few other.

While in the NAS 2018, conducted on February 5, around 15 Lakh students of Class 10 in 44,304 government and government-aided schools were evaluated across 610 districts of the country.

The assessment of NAS 2018 was mainly based on five subjects that are English, Mathematics, Science, Social Science and Modern Indian Language (MIL). This subjects were the core disciplines of Class 10 curriculum.

Now, a new assessment criteria will be prepared for the for the next round of NAS which is planned to be conducted in November 2021, keeping in mind the changes made in Indian Education system.
