On August 11, Punjab Chief Minister, who is the Captain Amarinder Singh, tweeted that on International Youth Day the state government will commence distribution of 1.73 lakh smartphones.

The CM’s tweet read as “Fulfilling our poll promise, we will commence distribution of 1.73 Lakh Smart Phones on August 12 on International Youth Day, to students studying in Class XII in Government schools. Amidst #Covid19, we hope these smartphones will help play a useful role in online education”.

To mark the launch of the scheme, each minister personally handed over 20 phones to students in various districts.

A total of 1.11 lakh beneficiaries of the scheme are from rural areas. Under the first phase, among the 1,74,015 Class 12 students, 94,832 belong to the Scheduled Caste category and 36,555 are OBC.

Speaking on this occasion, the CM said people strongly believe in the promises listed in the election manifesto and it was, thus, his duty to ensure the implementation of each one of them.

The CM added on to it that the smartphone which is being distributed under the scheme is a good functional phone, adding that it will become one of the major tool for the education of the students.

Education Minister who is Vijay Inder Singla, earlier addressing about this occasion,  said a total sum of Rs 92 crore was being spent for getting these smartphones.
