The Punjab University, situated in Chandigarh, has recently issued a formal notification informing the introduction of Entrance Examination to be conducted by the University for providing admission to Master of Arts Economics Programme from the next academic session of 2019-20.

The entrance examination will consist of the same format as of the existing admission test of PG-level courses. The paper will consist of 75 multiple choice based questions to be completed in the time period of 1.5 hours. Every right answer will award 1 mark and every wrong answer will deduct 0.4 marks.

The proposal was imposed by the economics department of the university and was passed in the day-long meeting of Senate, a governing body at the university.

“MA Economics is one of the most in-demand courses at PU. For a total of 80 seats, more than 12,000 applications a year (on an average) are received by the department of economics,” informed a senior faculty member from the department.

Senate member, professor (emeritus), PU said, “The move is aimed to give a level-field to students. We receive entries from all across the country. Different universities and institutes have a different benchmark and marking systems, often students from institutes with strict marking systems are left at disadvantage. After the entrance exam, there would be equal treatment for all the students and only meritorious ones will get through.”

The syllabus for the entrance examination will be based on BA (honors) and BA economics courses conducted by the university.

It has been reported that the exam will consist of 10 questions each from microeconomics and macroeconomics.
