Rosatom is a Russian Agency for atomic energy, who is also the main equipment supplier for the Kundankulam Nuclear Power Project in Tamil Nadu, has decided to offer scholarships to the Indian students in the field of nuclear energy, according to a statement released by them on Monday.

The Russian University offers many courses related to this field such as specializing in nuclear engineering offered by the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI in Moscow and Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU) in Siberia.

The scholarships would include fully-funded tuition fees and partly-funded living expenses.  The deadline for the first round of applications closes on February 15.

Scholarships are available for students interested in studying nuclear energy-related fields in Russia and include tuition fees and free preparatory courses of Russian language (depends on university programme).

The registration is open on Russia Study website, russia.study/en, the statement said.

Bachelor’s degree involves programmes in nuclear power engineering and thermal physics; nuclear reactors and materials; and power plant design, operation, and engineering. Master’s programmes are in nuclear physics and engineering; power engineering and thermo physics among others.

TPU is the only Russian university equipped with a nuclear research reactor available for foreign students. The IRT-T research reactor was commissioned in July 1967 and is now used for research in peaceful atom technologies such as nuclear medicine, transmutation neutron alloying, isotope engineering, and thorium power engineering. More than 12,000 specialists have graduated from TPU since then, including 8,000 trained in nuclear engineering and research.

TPU offers bachelor’s degrees in nuclear physics and technology; and master’s in nuclear power installations operation, nuclear medicine; and in thermal and renewable energy.

“The goal of the scholarship is to support interest in nuclear research and capabilities among young Indian scientists and engineers, and contribute to solving some of the world’s most critical issues in the nearest future, allowing for the continent to be self-sufficient,” said Rosatom South Asia CEO Andrey Shevlyakov.
