A subject that is dreaded by many is ironically the world’s most commonly studied subject.

Yes, you guessed it right- Mathematics. In a recent study published by Cambridge Assessment International Education (Cambridge International) it has been deduced that ‘mathematics’ is one subject which is consistently studied by around 88% of the county’s population.

The study which is published in the Global Education Census 2018 cites that the most commonly studied subjects across the world are consistent with mathematics (88 per cent) ranking highest in every one of the ten countries surveyed.

Other subjects that follows mathematics are English, Chemistry and Physics with 84%, 65% and 63% respectively, except some regional variations.

According to the Cambridge study, in Argentina and the US, History is the third most studied subject after mathematics and English.

In China, Spain and South Africa, the focus is more on humanities, with languages other than English representing the third most studied subject.

The survey sample showed interest mostly in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) subjects, sometimes at the expense of other subjects students prefer, including humanities.

According to Global Education Census 2018, most of the students are not studying what they love.

The high proportion of students do not currently stud typically Arts and Humanities courses.

The Subjects that students love to study other than STEM are:

22 per cent said Music
21 per cent said Art and Design
17 per cent said Drama
13 per cent said English literature
12 per cent said History,
11 per cent said Computer Science.

by According to the survey, private tuition outside school is now common across the world and in Asia students most likely to receive extra lessons.

Around 57 per cent of students in China mostly said they have lessons outside of their school and 55 per cent of students in India have a private tutor or coach outside school hours.

Incidentally, even the most common privately tutored subject in the world is Maths. Approximately 66 per cent of students are being privately tutored for mathematics, which is followed by physics (43 per cent).
