The Supreme Court of India has issued orders for the All India Institute if Medical Sciences (AIIMS) to postpone the INI CET 2021 exam and to conduct it after a month. The Institute of National Importance Combined Entrance Test (INI CET) is an entrance exam for Postgraduate Medical courses held annually.

AIIMS, the organising institute for INI CET, scheduled the exam to be held on June 16. However the Apex court referred this decision to be as “arbitrary”. The devision bench of Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice M R Shah said that AIIMS fixed the date for conducting this exam as a personal choice without considering the interests if other stakeholders.

This decision was made by the Supreme court while hearing the PIL (Public Interest Litigation) filed by 26 doctors against AIIMS challenging the date of examination. The bench supported petitioners concern and said that the aspirants are doctors as well. They are serving as frontline workers and has to prepare for exams too.

The Court proposed to postpone the exam by atleast a month to provide time for this students to prepare well for their exams as well as complete their COVID duties. If they are serving for the nation, we can atleast do a our bit for them said Justice Shah. The Bench further added that AIIMS do not has any convincing reason to not postpone the exam.

During the proceeding, the Authorities representing AIIMS initially opposed the deferment of exams stating that it will create scarcity of doctors in medical sector and will result in a unpredictable situation. Arguing to this, the Bench strictly mentioned that either AIIMS take a decision themselves or we have to interfere and defer the exam on its behalf.

Following the argument, AIIMS agreed to postpone the exam. It will soon release a new date for holding INI CET. AIIMS authorities also told the court that if any aspirant is unable to appear on the new date. They will be given an additional chance to take the Entrance test which will be held in November.
