SWAYAM is an instrument for self-actualisation providing opportunities for a life-long learning, providing virtually every course that is taught at the university/college/school level and these shall be offered by best of the teachers in India and elsewhere.

All the courses are interactive, prepared by the best teachers in the country and are available, free of cost to the residents in India. More than 1,000 specially chosen faculty and teachers from across the Country have participated in preparing these courses.

The project is the artwork of Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD) in association with Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), Consortium for Educational Communication (CRC), National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS), National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL), University Grants Commission (UGC) and Indian Institute Of Management Bangalore (IIM-B).

The website covers school education, undergraduate education, diploma courses, certificate courses and postgraduate education. The services are also accessible through the mobile application of SWAYAM.

Courses available for school students

For students of class 9 to 12, SWAYAM is offering a wide range of learning options and is taking care of all the courses of all streams.

These courses will be of aid to those learners who are regular and learners who had discontinued their studies due to some reason. Learners can choose between regular or open secondary education streams.

  • Painting (1)

    The course comes with the title Secondary (Painting). Painting is nothing but skills to express oneself through colour and proportion and it also helps cultivate aesthetic sense. It further aims to develop the visual sense of the learner and to help him/her appreciate the expressive value of the line, texture, space, rhythm etc. As the student is above the age of 14, they are taught the secondary level of painting. The subject comes under the category of Arts and Recreation.

  • E learning (1)

    The title for the course is Bridging the Dementia Divide and sheds prime focus on General subject catalogues. This course will help participants improve the lives of people with dementia, adopting a person-centred and integrated approach. It is suitable for anyone interested in dementia or for those caring for people with dementia including partners, families and health and social care practitioners. The level for the course is secondary and higher secondary.

  • Commerce (2)

    There are two courses available in the category Secondary (Accountancy)  and  Secondary (Business Studies).

    Secondary (Accountancy)– This course will enable the learners to have a basic knowledge of accountancy. this course covers the meaning, objectives, advantages and limitations of accounting and book keeping. Learners will get an insight of various accounting terms, concepts and conventions.

    Secondary (Business studies)- Business activities have made our life easy by fulfilling our basic needs. Business helps to improve our standard of living. This course in Business Studies makes the learners understand the nature of business activities, classification of business activities and various types of Trade.

  • Economics (2)

    There are two courses available in the category Economics 1 and Secondary (Economics)

    Economics 1– The course in Indian Economics is aimed at introducing the learners to the foundations of Indian Economy and its development since Independence. The syllabus is of secondary and higher secondary level.

    Secondary (Economics)– Economics is concerned with the production, consumption and transfer of wealth. For satisfying wants man organises his resources. But Economics comes to help him as there is a problem to tackle scarce resources. In this course, we discuss the meaning of economics, branches of economics, positive and normative economics.

  • Ethics (1)

    There are two courses available in the category Secondary (English) and Secondary: English

    Secondary (English)– In today’s time, a learner needs to be equipped with working English Language abilities so that s/he interacts meaningfully with the wide world ahead of him/her. Also, to ensure that a learner is not falling back in terms of access to study other courses and avenues of knowledge and information, knowledge of English is required. This course helps learner get closer to that objective.

    Secondary: English– This component comprises of a) grammar and usage and b) vocabulary. All grammar items will be selected from the text and further conceptualised for presentation and practise. This course focuses on brushing these skills of the student and also introduce much more skill related to the subject.

  • Indian culture (1)

    The course comes with the title Secondary (Indian Culture and Heritage). India is one of the most ancient civilizations of the world. In fact what makes Indian culture unique among other ancient civilizations is its ability to accommodate and assimilate external influences and weave them into its own cultural fabric. The subject discusses the beauty of Indian Culture and Heritage, hence, it is an unconventional option for those who would like to study the issue in depth.

  • Psychology (1)

    The course comes with the title Secondary (Psychology). The study of psychology deals with important aspects of human behaviour and mental processes. The study of psychology is significant to one’s personal growth and development and for facilitating the process of social development. The course is rich with not only research content but also many case studies. Aspirants must give the course a shot.

  • Social studies (1)

    The title of the course is Secondary (Social science). Social Science involves the study of human society which makes us familiar with the evolution of human society and covers the major civilisations of the world. You will learn about India and the world during the Ancient, Mediaeval and Modern period.

  • Sociology (2)

    There are four courses available in this category Sociology 1Sociology 3NCERT Geography 01 – Class 11NCERT Geography 03 – Class 12.

    Sociology 1– In sociology we study about social institutions, social systems and social processes. The discipline of sociology or academic or systematic study of society emerged in Europe during 17th and 18th century. This course stretches for 5 months (two weeks) and each week, two modules will be released.

    Sociology 3– Sociology as a discipline attempted to understand the nature and extent of these changes. What were the causes and consequences of these changes? How societies transformed from traditional to modern societies. The schedule remains same as Sociology 1.

    NCERT Geography 01 – Class 11– You have studied Geography as one of the components of social sciences up to the secondary stage. Now you will study Geography as an independent subject and learn about the physical environment of the earth, human activities and their interactive relationships.

    NCERT Geography 03 – Class 12– Geography is an elective subject at the higher secondary stage. It is an academic discipline and school subject with defined perspective, knowledge and skills. Geographical knowledge is useful in daily lives because it is a valuable medium for the education of young people.

  • Hindi (1)

    The title of the course is Secondary (Hindi). The human race is existing and flourishing because of one asset no other race has, our ability to speak. And hence, to train students how to optimally use this asset, this course is introduced. The syllabus includes speaking as well as writing skill development along with upgrading the quality of grammar in Hindi. The course also includes literature pieces.

  • Sanskrit (1)

    The title of the course is Secondary (Sanskrit). Sanskrit is the oldest known language, and as said, is the mother of a large number of languages. The language’s biggest asset is it being scientific. That is why many universities around the world have introduced this in the curriculum. In this course, the learners will learn the language from the elementary level and will soon be skilled in the language and life’s daily routine as well.

    The course available in this category is NCERT Accountancy 01 (Class 11). This course will help the aspiring accountants to strengthen the conceptual base in accounting through a variety of e-resources like video lectures, enrichment materials for supplementing textbooks, self-assessment inventory and checklist, external web links and many more activities for smooth progression and joyful learning.

  • Mathematics (1)

    The course available in the category is Secondary (Maths). Mathematics introduces children to concepts, skills and thinking strategies that are essential in everyday life and support learning across the curriculum. The courses brush off the edges of the skills of the learner and also renews the interest in them.

  • Biology (2)

    There are two courses available in the category- Biology 1 and Biology.

    Biology 1– Biology is the science of life forms and living processes. The living world comprises a wide diversity of organisms. The course will deal with “Diversity in the Living world”, “Structural Organization in Plants and Animals” and “Cell Structure and Function” from class XI Biology. This is a 5 months duration course (20 weeks). Each week two modules will deliver.

    Biology– The course is designed for class 12th on NCERT textbook pattern. The course will deal with Reproduction in Organisms, Sexual Reproduction in Flowering plants, Human Reproduction and Reproductive Health from Unit 6. This is a five months course and will start from October 1st, 2016 till 28th February 2017. Every week two modules will be released (on Monday) with Self-assessment on every Saturday. One live class will be planned every week.

  • Computer Science (1)

    The course available under this category is Secondary (Data Entry Operations).  In this subject, student will learn about word processing which helps them to format their document and merge their document with data. Also, student will learn about spreadsheet which helps them to analyse their data and presentation software helps them to present their views or ideas to the audience.

  • Environment (3)

    There are three courses in this category- NCERT Biology 03 (Class 12)NCERT Chemistry 01 Class 11 and NCERT Chemistry 03 – Class 12.

    NCERT Biology 03 (Class 12)– The course is designed for class 12th on NCERT textbook pattern. The course will deal with Reproduction in Organisms, Sexual Reproduction in Flowering plants, Human Reproduction and Reproductive Health from Unit 6. This is a five months course and will start from October 1st, 2016 till 28th February 2017. Every week two modules will be released (on Monday) with Self-assessment on every Saturday. One live class will be planned every week.

    NCERT Chemistry 01 Class 11– This course is intended to cover the following topics for the students of Class XI, Semester 1 specifically, and others interested in general:

    There are four courses available in the category Physics 1Physics 03NCERT Physics 01 (Class 11) and NCERT Physics 03 (Class 12)

    Physics 1– The excitement of learning to do systematic scientific work is the root of this course. You will learn methods of measurement-including universally accepted norms. Kinematics and Dynamics, one that helps us realise how things move and the other what causes them to move. Some energy is required to move things and we will define some scientific terminology in a way that communication about physics to others is easy. In this course, we will learn about different ways bodies move –motion in a straight line, in a plane.

    Physics 03– Course-3 in physics will cover very interesting phenomena that we have to observe around us. The concepts of static electricity where you will understand electric charges and fields. You will learn methods of describing electric fields and their applications. This course is divided into 40 modules for better understanding.

    NCERT Physics 01 (Class 11)– The world around us has an astonishing variety of phenomenon. Physics gives us a chance to take a close look and try to understand these. We have evidence to support the work since ancient times by thinkers, philosophers and scientists, who tried to unravel the mystery around us. Physics problem with numbers is called numerical. Mathematics is important for this course. You will work on many of them during the course.

    NCERT Physics 03 (Class 12)– Course-3 in physics will cover very interesting phenomena that we have to observe around us.     The course available in this category is Secondary (Science and tech). Science and Technology course has been specially designed for learners who are motivated enough to continue their education.
