More than half of the graduating class of Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay this year is pursuing technology-related jobs or seeking admission into universities for specialized higher education. Consulting and finance accounted for 12% and 11.5% respectively as non-core fields.

This senior survey to map the future ambitions of students was conducted over a sample size of 192 UG and PG course students of 2018.

About 42.2 percent of the respondents expressed an interest or had already taken the GRE while a majority of others (55 percent) have planned to prepare for management sector exams such as CAT and GMAT. A small percentage (12%), wish to appear for the UPSC civil service examinations as well.

While these near-future plans exist, a considerable number of students want to make a shift towards entrepreneurship after five years or so. This is a rise to 11 percent of the total, compared to 2016 when a survey of this kind was last conducted.

From the last year, rates of tech-related jobs have dropped down by almost 33 percent. Moreover, finance and consulting too have dropped down to 5% and 8.3% since 2016.  

The performance this year has been stellar. Majority of the batch is passing out with high scores and a multitude of respondents had their CPI between 8 and 9 (34%). 18.84% of the respondents had a CPI greater than 9. As low as 2.6% of the students had obtained a CPI between 4 and 6.

The majority of the batch, an 83%, graduated with a BTech degree, 16.22% with a dual degree and a small percent (1%) passed out with an integrated masters degree.

The students expressed their individual internships experiences and if it had some influence on their career choices. A large number cited it to be a major influence (42.2%). This was followed by 38.5% of the respondents quoting the internship having some influence while somewhat 9% felt that their career choice remained indifferent to their internship experience.
