The University Grants Commission (UGC) has informed the institutions to hold the final-semester or the final year exams for the graduating batches by the end of September. The council said that these exams can be conducted through online, offline, or through a mixture of both.

The UGC reported to the press on Monday evening that it has advised the institutes not to cancel the exam and go ahead with the scheduling. This decision was taken to “ensure academic credibility, career opportunities, and future progress of students globally”.

The UGC said that, “Academic evaluation is a very important milestone in every education system. The performance in examinations gives confidence and satisfaction to the students and is a reflection of competence, performance and credibility that is necessary for global acceptability.”

The university will hold a special exam for the final year students by September. It also stated that those with backlog will be evaluated only through an exam.

This decision was taken in a meeting held on Monday. The meeting was scheduled to revisit the ‘indicative alternative calendar’. However, the HRD ministry asked to revise the “Guidelines on Examinations and Academic Calendar for the Universities in View of COVID-19 Pandemic and Subsequent Lockdown”. With the subsequent recommendations by the other ministries and council, the decision has come into effect.

This decision will be impacting several universities in their examination schedules across the country. States such as Gujarat and Karnataka are waiting for the regulator’s stand on the issue. However, those states which have canceled their higher education exams are unlikely to revise their decision.
