The University Grants Commission has announced through a formal notification stating that the ‘Deemed to be University’ tag will be granted to those institutes which have been in existence for more than 20 years. In order to ‘ensure quality education’, UGC introduced regulations in the eligibility criteria of the ‘deemed to be university’ tag. Along with 20 years of existence, the institute should also possess 3.26 CGPA accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA).

The circular informed that the institute should also be ranked in the top 50 institutes in any category or be a part of Top 100 overall ranking by National Institute Ranking Framework. Also, the teacher-student ratio should not be less than 1:20 with the faculty including not less than 100 teachers and 2000 students enrolled under them. Along with that, the Institute must contain five postgraduate departments or more.

According to the new norms formulated, after the tag is granted to the institute, the UGC officials will monitor the academic results at an annual basis. There should be at least 50% of the passing percentage obtained by the graduate students. After the status gets granted, the institutes will have to take part in the NIRF ranking, provide a choice-based credit system to the students.

It was reported that it will be compulsory for the institutes to form a selection committee for monitoring the recommendations to be followed. The institutes which will perform well under the status shall be allowed to expand.
