UGC give universities 6 months time to fill up vacant teaching posts

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has asked the Higher Educational Institutes (HEIs) to fill up the vacant positions of their teaching posts.

The official notification have been released by UGC to aware the universities and institutions for such process.

The notification read, β€œShortage of quality teaching faculty in HEIs is one amongst the many issues presently confronting the higher education system in the country. This is also effecting the quality of higher education. Therefore, these guidelines should be followed by HEIs to ensure timely filling up of vacant faculty posts with approximately eligible and competent candidates.β€œ

The Selection Process that needs to be followed by the institutions:

  1. HIEs should follow the selection process as per their Acts, Statutes or Constituent documents and in accordance with the University Grants Commission- Minimum Qualifications for Appointment of Teachers and other Academic Staff in Universities and Colleges and other Measures for the Maintenance of Standards in Higher Education) Regulation, 2018.
  2. HIEs should, however, ensure that all the vacant posts, along with the reservation details, are uploaded on the online portal nherc.in. The monitoring of the filling up of the vacancies would be done by the MHRD and UGC through this portal.
  3. HEIs should initiate and complete the selection process within a period of 6 months.

The Time Frame given by the UGC to the universities

The UGC aware the universities that the violation of the aforesaid guidelines may lead to appropriate action by the UGC against the institutions including withholding the grants.

University Grants Commission

Soon after Independence, the University Education Commission was set up in 1948 under the Chairmanship of Dr. S Radhakrishnan β€œTo report on Indian university education and suggest improvements and extensions that might be desirable to suit the present and future needs and aspirations of the country.”

It recommended that the University Grants Committee be reconstituted on the general model of the University Grants Commission of the United Kingdom with a full-time Chairman and other members to be appointed from amongst educationists of repute.
