After Haryana, The Uttar Pradesh School education board called as Uttar Pradesh Madhyamik Shiksha Parishad (UPMSP) has decided to introduce NCC (National Cadet Council) as an optional or elective subject from next academic year.

The Optional subject will be available for students of higher secondary or Class 10 and Senior secondary or class 12 in the state. This subject will also be included in the Final board exams and students will be marked in results on the basis of their performance.

Currently, the UP board is preparing a course curriculum and detailed programme of training according to which the students will be introduced to the subject. But untill 2023, only practical exams will be held for this subject and written exam will be introduced later when an overall syllabus is ready.

According to UPMSP, NCC will be the 6th optional subject at intermediate level alongside the compulsory subjects i.e., Science, Mathematics, Social studies, hindi and english. Out of 6 optional subjects, the student can choose any one according to there interest.

Although, at senior secondary level or Class 12, the NCC as an optional subject will be available for students of Arts and humanities stream only. The Students of science and commerce stream will lack the option to choose NCC but they are already provided with 17 other elective subjects while Arts stream has lesser options.

After CBSE board and Haryana education Board adopted NCC as an Elective subject, UP board also followed the same ideology. The UPMSP sent a proposal to state government in February 2021 regarding the same. The government of UP granted the approval to board on 7th April after discussing with the associated stakeholders.

As the New education policy (NEP 2021) is being implemented, several state boards and central board are coming up with addition of new subjects and courses in the curriculum providing the students a wide range of options to study with.
