Bollywood film industry has remade a lot of foreign films, especially Hollywood ones. Most of them have been critical and commercial successes.

Here is the list of ten Hindi films that are remakes of Hollywood films.

1.Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahi: This 1991 romantic comedy is directed by Mahesh Bhatt and stars Aamir Khan, and Pooja Bhatt in the lead roles. It an adaptation of 1934 American film ‘It Happened One Night’ directed by Frank Capra. It was already remade twice as the 1956 Hindi film ‘Chori Chori’ and 1966 Tamil film ‘Chandhrodhayam.’ In ‘Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahi’, there were several scenes that were lifted while some of the dialogues which were literally translated into Hindi. The film was a critical and commercial success and boosted the career of newcomer Pooja Bhatt. 

2. Baazigar: Directed by Abbas-Mustan, this 1993 thriller film is inspired by the 1991 British flick ‘A Kiss Before Dying.’ It stars Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol and debutant Shilpa Shetty in the lead roles. The film was a massive critical and commercial success and established Khan as a lead actor. It garnered ten nominations at the 39th Filmfare Awards, including Best Film and won four awards, including Best Actor for Khan.

3.Hum Hai Rahi Pyar Ke: Another film in the list directed by Mahesh Bhatt, this 1993 film features Aamir Khan (who also co-wrote the film) and Juhi Chawla in the lead roles with Sharokh Bharucha and Kunal Khemu in supporting roles. The film was inspired by the 1958 film ‘Houseboat’ starring Cary Grant and Sophia Loren. It was appreciated by both critics and audiences and earned several awards including Filmfare Best Actress Award for Juhi Chawla. It also garnered the National Film Award – Special Jury Award / Special Mention (Feature Film) and the Filmfare Best Film Award.

4. Jo Jeetha Wohi Sikander: The film that catapulted Aamir Khan to stardom, ‘Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander’ is a 1992 sports drama directed by Mansoor Khan. It stars Aamir Khan, Ayesha Jhulka, Deepak Tijori, Mamik Singh and Pooja Bedi in the lead role. The film is inspired by 1985 John Badham’s ‘American Flyers’ and the 1979 film’Breaking Away’, directed by Peter Yates. Upon its release, the film became a critical and commercial success and earned several accolades including Filmfare Award for Best Film. 

5.Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha:  Written and directed by Anees Bazmee, the film stars Ajay Devgn and Kajol in the lead roles. Released in 1998, this romantic comedy is a remake of the 1995 Hollywood film French Kiss, directed by Lawrence Kasdan. It met with mostly positive critical response and proved to be one of the highest grossing film of 1998.

6. Awara Paagal Deewana: This Vikram Bhatt-directed action comedy film was released in 2002 and stars Akshay Kumar, Sunil Shetty, Aftab Shivdasani,  Paresh Rawal, Preeti Jhangiani, Aarti Chhabria and Amrita Arora. It is a remake of the 2000 American crime black comedy flick ‘The Whole Nine Yard’, directed by Jonathan Lynn and starring Bruce Willis, Mathew Perry and Amanda Peet.

7. Partner: This 2007 comedy film was directed by David Dhawan and marked the reunion with the long time collaborators Dhawan and actor Govinda. It stars Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif, Govinda and Lara Dutta in the lead roles. It is an unofficial remake of the 2005 American romantic comedy film ‘Hitch’ featuring Will Smith in the lead.

‘Partner’ was a major commercial success despite receiving unfavorable reviews from critics.

8. Baghban: Directed by Ravi Chopra and produced by B.R Chopra, this 2003 family drama film stars Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan, Hema Malini, Aman Verma, Samir Soni, Mahima Chaudhry, Paresh Rawal, Rimi Sen, Lilette Dubey and Asrani. It is a remake of the 1937 American film ‘Make Way For Tomorrow’.

The film met with critical acclaim with particular praise for Amitabh’s performance. It was also a box-office hit. ‘Baghban’ was later remade in Kannada language as ‘Ee Bandhana.’

9. Ittefaq: This suspense thriller film was released in 1969 and was directed by Yash Chopra. It stars Rajesh Khanna, Nanda, and Iftekhar and was one of the few films of its time with out any song. ‘Ittefaq’ is the remake of a little-seen 1965 British thriller film titled ‘Signpost To Murder’.

The film was remade in 2017 under the same titled and starred Siddharth Malhotra, Sonakshi Sinha and Akshaye Khanna.

10. Kaante: Directed by Sanjay Gupta, this is one of those rare films that was liked by the maker of the original film. Starring an ensemble cast of Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Gupta, Kumar Gaurav, Lucky Ali and Mahesh Manjrekar, it is an unofficial remake of Quentin Tarantino’s 1992 crime film ‘Reservoir Dogs.’ Tarantino confessed that ‘Kaante’ is his favorite among the many films inspired by his work.  The film met with mixed to positive critical feedback, but proved to be a financial success.
