The term equality can differ from person to person and hence from caste to caste in a society such as ours which is diversified into different groups labeled on the basis of caste and religion. The reason why ‘Demanding Equality’ is just a myth and ‘Let Live’ becomes the major goal for people who are outcasted on the basis of their caste and religion.

And the reason I loved Mari Selvaraj’s 2018 film ‘Pariyerum Perumal’ is because that it never talks about the point of Demanding Equality, he crafts a divine story using various events and aspects with a subtle theme of “Let Live”. In short, the film narrates the story of Pariya (Kathir) who forms a great bond with his classmate Jo (Anandi Kalyan), and the series of events as his experiences with his life.

A still from Pariyerum Perumal

The film does not intend to sympathize with a particular section of the society, and in subtle ways, it just shows viewers the events in the form of narrative which have been inspired by true stories. Each and every character represents a particular section in the society, for instance, Pariya’s friend being an upper caste is out and out from the circle of discrimination. And the ending of the film concludes that “A Secret has been kept Alive” highlighting the different mindsets relating to the change in a modernized society.
