Comebacks are always greater than setbacks and Sushmita Sen is ready to prove this with her upcoming series ‘Aarya’ . The show is set to stream from June 19 on Disney+ Hotstar and is directed by Ram Madhvani.
Sushmita made her Bollywood debut in 1996 with Mahesh Bhatt’s ‘Dastak’, and went on to star in hit films such as Biwi No.1, Aankhen, Main Hoon Na and Maine Pyaar kyun kiya. At the age of 18, she became the first Indian woman to win the Miss Universe award in 1994.
Her last hindi film was Anees Bazmee’s comedy ‘No Problem(2010) and her last film as an actor was ‘Nirbaak'(2015). Thereafter, she took a sabbatical from films and is back onscreen after a gap of 5 years. Sushmita came back with the intention to only do those roles which will push her as an artiste.
Talking about her comeback with the Press Trust Of India, in a live interview, she said “I put out a word everywhere that I am ready to work and I will give my everything. But I need something that will help me grow as an actor. If you give me that I will go out my way. I want to do good work.”
‘Aarya‘ is the actor’s digital debut, who was looking to work in only those films or shows which had some substance. Sushmita admitted to doing films before her sabbatical just for the sake of work.
Her digital debut will see her playing the titular character of ‘Aarya’ who has to protect her family. The plot is about a middle class family running a pharma company, acting as a front for illegal drug business. It shows how the family gets sucked into the illegal world and Aarya’s fight to save her family.
Talking about the show, she said:
By God’s grace, I got the most incredible beautiful content, a fantastic platform, Hotstar. For me, this culmination of everything coming together has been because I gave it time, I gave my everything to wait. I said I will sit at home but when I do something it has to be worth it. And I can proudly say it now (with Aarya).
Besides Sushmita, the show will also star Chandrachur Singh as her husband and Anupam Kher’s son, Sikander Kher in an important role.
