A still from Sadak

Today, Alia Bhatt took to her social media handles to announce the release date of her upcoming project Sadak 2 which is a sequel to the 1991 film ‘Sadak’. Directed by Mahesh Bhatt, the film starred Sanjay Dutt and Pooja Bhatt in the lead roles and now the sequel will mark their reunion along with Aditya Roy Kapur and Alia Bhatt. So, we decided to revisit this superhit 90’s thriller ahead of the release of its sequel.

Sadak was a story that revolved around Ravi (Sanjay Dutt) a taxi driver who falls in love with Pooja (Pooja Bhatt), a woman forced into prostitution by an evil madman known by the name of Maharani. In a thrilling experience, the film highlights Ravi’s struggle to rescue her from Maharani, who follows the principle of not letting any prostitute fall in love with clients. While Dutt was appreciated for his performance, we should definitely not undermine the villain who completely stole the show.

A still from Sadak

Maharani played by Sadashiv Amrapurkar is considered to be one of the iconic villains of the 1990s. The actor’s performance was on point and did more than justice to the story and kept the viewers thrilled with his portrayal, an important character that actually built up this thriller in the most interesting way possible. Maharani was cruel, not a gray character but could go to any level to torture another human being and ran a brothel as shown in the film. A transgender character that gave a subtle theme of horror to this thriller.

Sanjay Dutt was highly appreciated for this film because he was not just an action hero, Bhatt did bring his emotional side on the screen which was pretty new in the 90s for a hero to feel weak. And that was a brave step which turned out to be a turning point in the story from the mindset of viewers.

Will the sequel match the essence of its originality? Well, it remains to be seen.
