Football is a global sport but not many people know about its history in India. People also don’t know about one such icon, who took Indian football to great heights. Syed Abdul Rahim was the man, whose story actor, Ajay Devgn is bringing on-screen soon. Titled ‘Maidaan’, the film which was supposed to release in November, will now release on August 13, 2021.
Since the film is releasing two days before India’s Independence day, it will mark as a perfect tribute to the legendary sports icon. Ajay himself announced this news via Instagram. He posted the following photo with a caption informing about the release date of the film. Here it is :

The film will tell the story of Syed Abdul Rahim, who was Indian football team’s coach and manager from 1950-63. He led India to win the gold medal at the 1962 Asian Games, while also taking the team to the semi finals in the 1956, Olympics, in Melbourne. Those were the golden years for Indian Football and the film will show how the sport brought the nation together.
Directed by Badhaai Ho fame, Amit Sharma, the film’s producers are Boney Kapoor, Zee Studios, Akash Chawla and Arunava Joy Sengupta.
In am interview with PTI, Ajay had talked about the film and had said :
“It is a fabulous story, director Amit Sharma has done a great job. Times have changed, storytelling has changed. There are no deliberate commercial elements added to a film today, be it a song or the romantic angle. Maidaan has been very moving and emotional journey for me.”
Other actors in the film are Gajraj Rao, Priyamani and Rudranil Ghosh.
Meanwhile, Ajay Devgn is waiting for the release of his film ‘Bhuj: The Pride Of India’, which will release on Disney + Hotstar soon.
