Indian thriller/crime film Raazi, starring Alia Bhatt, which is set to be released in India on the 11th of May, has officially been banned in Pakistan. The movie itself is of an extremely controversial nature, which is why none of the production companies in Pakistan agreed to air it in the country. No distributer appeared to be inclined to take such a huge risk.

Raazi is an adaptation of an old novel called Calling Sehmat, written by Harinder Singh. The plot, which revolves around Alia Bhatt’s character, an Indian spy, falling in love with a Major from Pakistan, was brought to life by Karan Johar under his Dharma Productions. The story takes place during the peak of the Indo-Pakistan war of 1971 – an era whose mention itself is controversial to the citizens of both countries. India, however, has shown no hesitation in agreeing to air Raazi across the country on 11th May.

A senior distribution company in Pakistan’s film industry stated that they were “disappointed” to see such controversial films being produced in India every once in a while. Alia Bhatt’s role in the film itself has made the companies unwilling to purchase the film. Certain patriotic feelings among the people of Pakistan had also been considered before all the production companies decided to show the red flag to Raazi.

An official from the aforementioned company stated that India should have foreseen the fact that all the distribution and production companies of Pakistan have strict rules against controversial content, and therefore, all controversial films are unanimously boycotted by them.
