A still from Gravity

Space Survivals are one of the interesting sub-genres of science fiction films, they are filled with mysteries and suspense which is enough to keep the viewers engaged. And of all the films that have explored this sub-topic, most of them have been interesting and kept us engaged throughout the end but Alfonso Cuaron’s 2013 film Gravity has been an emotional journey filled with thrills and passion of survival. The thing which separates this film from others is that it talks about survival in outer space while metaphorically the plot deals with the inner space and soul of our protagonist Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock).

Talking about the main plot of the film, it is the story of a failed space mission wherein all the crew members, unfortunately, lose their lives excluding Dr. Ryan Stone. It follows her journey of getting back to earth indirectly dealing with her personal loss and getting her out of the shell. t is a battle against time and keeping fuel and oxygen levels intact. Cuaron’s way of filmmaking and his characters have always been an interesting thing to watch certainly making us uncomfortable and at the same time delivering us hope.

A still from Aningaaq

In a similar way, there are few story arcs little mysterious in the film Gravity created by Cuaron including the misconnected call by Stone which introduces a character Aningaaq and we wonder the reason behind this scene which is quite interesting. Alfonso’s son made a short film titled Aningaaq which highlights the other side of this eminent scene from Gravity where she hears some sound of joy direct from the Earth which she believes to be the last moment of her life. The mystery and story behind this scene take us to an Inuit man in Greenland, in a wasteland of snow nearly as vast as her wasteland of space. He, too, is struggling with questions of life and death as he wrestles with putting down a dog he loves.

This story is a metaphor to Stone’s inner space story as it talks about the people who go fishing out in snow-clad place just for their survival which acts as a sign of hope to our protagonist. This short film is available on Youtube.
