A still from Mr and Mrs Iyer

Aparna Sen directed the film Mr. and Mrs. Iyer which released in 2002. The film featured Rahul Bose and Konkona Sen Sharma in the lead roles. The feeling of love and affection between the two central characters glues you to the beauty of this film. A lot of things are conveyed without speaking a lot. The film follows the story of a Brahman woman Meenakshi who along with her newborn baby is on a way back home where she meets Rahul Bose’s character, Raja. The times are pretty bad due to the religious riots. And circumstances lead Bose to act as a Hindu i.e Mr. Iyer, husband of Meenakshi.

A still from Mr and Mrs Iyer

Director Aparna Sen highlights a variety of topics with just random scenes which will be unnoticeable if you are not that deeply rooted within the film. The story strongly takes on the political tensions across the nation and how everything is connected through religions and castes. The film builds up tensions in a lot of sequences throughout the bus and train journey.

The point of this movie usually portrays different messages, i.e Communalism is bad and the Vengeance is pointless. The other major talk point of this film is the bond shared by the two lead characters and their “Unnamed Bond” which is clearly depicted through the whole film and majorly due to its beautiful ending.
