Vijay Ratnakar Gutte made his directorial debut with Anupam Kher and Akshaye Khanna starrer ‘The Accidental Prime Minister‘. The film released this week amidst controversies and agitation across the nation. It opened with mixed reviews, but, the lead actor’s performances earned appreciation from the audience as well as from the critic.

Noting that the film is competing with big movies like ‘Uri‘, ‘Simmba‘, ‘Petta‘ and ‘Viswasam‘, it did decent business, very close to what expected by the trade pundits.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh shared the box office collection of the film on Twitter. He wrote, “#TheAccidentalPrimeMinister picked up from evening shows onwards… Records decent numbers on Day 1… Fri ₹ 4.50 cr. India biz. #TAPM,”

According to trade analyst Girish Johar, “The controversies around the film have increased the awareness around it. Also, the story involves the premier family of the country so there is a lot of political buzz around it. Some are even looking at it as political agenda. Anupam Kher playing the role of former PM Manmohan Singh has also raised many eyebrows. So, with so much talk happening around the film, it is expected to earn Rs 3-4 crores on its opening day.” He said that the film’s business might get affected by Vicky Kaushal‘s ‘Uri: The Surgical Strike’.

The film is based on the 2014 memoir written by Manmohan Singh’s media adviser Sanjaya Baru, with the same name. It shows the story of what went inside the Congress party and PMO while some of the biggest decisions of the UPA tenure were being made.
