Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, who has dared to express his views and to take a stand on political issues in the past has risked it again. He stands one of the few first celebrities who raised their voices against the recent brutality by Delhi Police against the students of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI). He has gone one step further and called out names from his fraternity for being a mute spectator in such critical times.

Recently Akshay Kumar liked a post on Twitter that was justifying the police violence. He later made a post sharing that it was an accident and he would not support such acts. A Twitterite shared Kumar’s post and wrote, “I have immense respect for Akshay Kumar. It must be extremely difficult to be trained in Martial Arts with a spine missing.” Another Twitter user shared this post and wrote, “So this is what Anurag Kashyap has to say about Akshay Kumar.” Kashyap shared the post and wrote, “Absolutely”.

Earlier this year after threats were made against his parents and daughter because of Kashyap being critical of the ruling government, he took a break from Twitter. But he is back now and for the right reason.

The students of JMI, a central university in the capital, were protesting against the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act on Sunday. The protests were turned violent allegedly by third party  and the police lathicharge the peaceful students. The Uttar Pradesh Police also barged into Aligarh Muslim University thrashing the students the same night.

Horrifying videos and pictures came up on social media showing police ruthlessly beating the students. The police also entered the campus (they cannot without the permission of Vice Chancellor), reading halls and thrashed students studying there. The event shook the capital and students from Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi University raised voices against the state violence. It has further spread to the entire nation with students from several universities in other states coming out in support of the students of JMI and AMU.

In a country where film stars are worshipped, the silence of major Bollywood celebrities is deafening and disheartening.
