The parameters of honoring someone in an Indian film award show is vague and mostly biased. It’s one of the reason’s why certain categories of the award shows are manufactured over night just to please some actor/actress who is performing a dance number. They might not be a very good actor, but their presence will earn them a ‘fresh face of the year award’ or ‘social media personality award’ etc.

In this years IIFA award ceremony, the Best actor award was given to Ranveer Singh for his performance in ‘Padmaavat.’ The problem lies somewhere between the winner and the nominees which included Ayushmann Khurrana for ‘Andhadhun’.

There is no doubt that Ranveer worked really hard to play the menacing villain, Allauddin-Khilji. For which he should be rewarded with an award for his category. The IIFA Award for Best Performance in a Negative Role honors the acting with grey shades.

Lending an award made for main roles to a negative role doesn’t make sense, technically. But logically, it does. Because Ranveer is a much bigger star that his counterpart Ayushmann. Since the award shows have slowly converted into money spilling extravaganza’s with no real value for talent or merit, we can’t really expect much.

If we look at the acting of Ayushmann in ‘Andhadhun’ where he plays a pianist pretending to be blind, there is subtlety in it. Though he could not express though his eyes, as he was blind wearing a shade throughout the movie. He conveys various emotions through his hand gestures and facial expressions.

Comparing that to the over the top, ‘look I’m acting’ kind of acting of Ranveer. In ‘Padmaavat’, he carries the same look on his face throughout every scene without any variety in emotions. There is no space for subtlety in that universe and everything is loud and over the top.

The award juries should not look at every film with the same lens and subtlety and nuance should be given a breathing space.
