A still from C U Soon

It seems that Content in mainstream Indian Cinema is on extinction and the Regional Cinema is on a mission to revive the cinematic bliss and redefine the meaning of films through the best of their stories. A thriller that gives a unique viewing experience, C U Soon sheds the light on relationships and connectivity in the age of the internet. Before getting to the main plot, we meet these characters through their screens and tabs of unread messages they bound to open. The film is filled with chats, glances in their video calls, etc. A rare and quality product in Indian Cinema.

Shot completely in the lockdown, the film is produced by Fahadh Faasil and Nazriya Nazim. The credits are also unique in itself, “Screenplay, editing, virtual cinematography, and direction” by Mahesh Narayanan. The trailer made me recall the 2018 film Searching but ‘C U Soon’ might have drawn an outline inspiration but marks its presence in terms of originality. Those who are sticking to the social media platforms will relate to the film which is to say we all will.

A still from C U Soon

The film starts off as a peaceful morning as Jimmy Kurien (Roshan Mathew) matches with a girl on Tinder named Anumol Sebastian (Darshana Rajendran), and the two soon take their relationship to other applications. They move swiftly to Google Chat (she doesn’t use Whatsapp). The change of applications is like new stages in their relationship. Jimmy is quite free as he discusses everything with her including his job, lifestyle, and family. On the other hand, Anu is quite restricted to herself which acts as a pre-conflict element in the film.

Eventually, both of them fall for each other like a portrait of love in a romantic film. The way film creates scenery through their communication is very unique which is why it never feels disengaging. Jimmy’s over obsessive nature makes his mother entrust a job on Kevin (Fahadh Faasil), who’s an expert in cybersecurity indirectly meaning he can bump into your personal life invading your privacy but everything is cool until the real conflict arises as Anu escapes leaving a video note behind.

The film takes various twists and turns as Jimmy lands in legal trouble now it’s up to Kevin to solve the mystery. And what unfolds is a perfect mystery of events. The film is crafted so well that there’s not a single dull moment and it concludes even more perfectly.

A quite refreshing take which you should not miss. ‘C U Soon’ now streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
