Why Cheat IndiaWhy Cheat India

Soumik Sen‘s ‘Why Cheat India’ is based on the education system in India, where wealthy aspirants and their parents fall into the trap of cheating. Where Emraan Hashmi plays the role of a classic anti-hero who enrolls bright students into his plan, makes them write proxy exams for students who are unable to score or pass, and then, helps them obtain a fake degree. An opportunistic Rakesh Singh aka Rocky (Emraan) sweet talks impressionable students and lures them to a world of crime with money.

The story of crime and corruption highlights plenty of problems and malpractices that currently trouble our education system. Director Soumik Sen’s harsh look at the exam paper mafia and the mindset of Indian parents often treating their children as ‘investments for the future’ is relevant, but the way he tells this gritty story doesn’t merit top grade.

The story is based on the rural location of Jaunpur, Jhansi, and Kota, where the pressure on the youth for the youth to be Engineers, Doctors, and MBA students is probably more than what the urban city student faces. As Rakesh Singh’s ambition to be a kingpin of exam mafia unfolds, the viewer gets to witness the kind of nexus that misuses and exploits bright students, and how this is the biggest scam running in the country.

The writer-director Soumik Sen is not able to provide the narrative the kind of edge and finesse the story demands. Many shots of the film feel disjointed due to the choppy editing and inconsistent screenplay. Whereas, Rocky’s personal story doesn’t add much depth to the plot. The second half is full of surprises and twists, highlighting the drama in the plot.

The portrayal of Rakesh, by Emraan, is confident, charming and keeps you hooked to the film. His most of the lines is the film is a serious of punches demanding claps. The fresh faces of Shreya Dhanwantary and Snigdhadeep Chatterjee are perfectly cast in the roles of naive characters.

If the story and the concept of ‘Why Cheat India’ was sharper and steadier, the film could have the potential to graduate to another level. Even with the flaws in the story, the movie is entertaining and engaging.
