A still from Udta Punjab

An interesting arc that builds up Abhishek Chaubey’s Udta Punjab is right from the beginning as the green board on the road welcomes travellers to Punjab. The board describes Punjab as the land of five rivers. Similarly, Udta Punjab is the story of five characters, namely Tommy Singh (Shahid Kapoor ), Sartaj Singh (Diljit Dosanjh ), Preet Sahni(Kareena Kapoor), an unnamed girl (Alia Bhatt ), and the fifth one being the Drugs itself. Like the rivers, the stories of these characters also merge together making up for a climax.

The film creates a world that is so realistic and deeply tragic focusing on the menace of drug addiction that has taken over the state of Punjab. In the midst of all the tragedy, the song Ikk Kudi stands out as the only hope in the story. The creation of which begins after Tommy is released from the jail and he begins working on a song which will be an anti-drug campaign more of his PR campaign.

A still from Udta Punjab

He struggles writing this piece attaching strings of music, in between we see him a couple of times playing the incomplete piece following the hardships for his inspiration. When he meets Alia Bhatt’s character, a couple of times the strings are played subtly in the background through various scenes as if the inspiration is being drawn in Tommy’s mind through this character. The song talks about the lost innocence of a girl metaphorically highlighting the chaos of drug addiction among the youths. “Some things are complete due to their incompleteness,” that’s how the story of the whole film unfolds metaphorically through the song Ikk Kudi.
