Dhadak (the Hindi remake of the acclaimed Marathi film Sairat) is Ishaan Khattar and Janhvi Kapoor’s debut film that we have been waiting for. This tragic romance film directed by Shashank Khaitan, produced by Dharma Productions and Zee Studios. The music of the film is composed by Ajay−Atul while the lyrics are written by Amitabh Bhattacharya. The background score is composed by John Stewart Eduri. Ishaan is already a known name, having starred in Majid Majidi’s Beyond the Clouds last year. Jhanvi, even before the film was announced, had been in the news due to her frequent public appearances. Directed by Shashank Khaitan, Dhadak also stars Ashutosh Rana, Kharaj Mukherjee and Aditya Kumar.

The movie has opened at the box office with a sum of Rs 8.71 crore and gets the best opening for newcomers, beats Student Of The Year, Hero, Heropanti

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh took to Twitter to share the figures of the film. “#Dhadak takes a HEROIC START… Rarely does a film starring absolute newcomers open so well… Day 1 is higher than #StudentOfTheYear [₹ 8 cr]… Fri ₹ 8.71 cr. India biz.”

Talking about the performance, trade analyst Girish Johar had told indianexpress.com, “I think the Maharashtra belt is important for the movie. There, people will go to the cinemas to see whether the Hindi version of much-loved Sairat is at par with the original or is it better than that. Actually, it can go either way because the comparison is inevitable.”

Even though the movie made a kick start at the box office, It was criticized for caste references and being a poor remake of Sairat. Rajeev Masand of News18 praised the acting performances of Ishaan Khatter and Janhvi Kapoor but found the film to be a sanitized version of the original and questioned the logic behind remaking Sairat, a film about the perils of caste system, if they had no intention of keeping the caste angle in the film. Masand gave the film a rating of 2.5 out of 5. Rachit Gupta of The Times of India criticized the film for being too glossy but appreciated Ishaan for his acting performance and director Shashank Khaitan for making a socially relevant film.
