Actress Dia Mirza kicked off the #WhyTheGap campaign introduced by India’s leading child rights organisation Save the Children India on August 18.

Save the Children is a global non-profit organisation which was founded in the year 1919. Brought to India in 2008, it swiftly became India’s leading independent child rights NGO. As of December 2018, it covers 19 states of India. The NGO was registered as ‘Bal Raksha Bharat’, and has been responsible for changing the lives of more than 10.1 million (1.1 crore) children till date.

The NGO started #WhyTheGap campaign on August 18, wherein the initiative required nominated people to – Post one of their childhood memories, highlight the privilege gap that resonated the most with them, tag Save the Children India and nominate 3 of their friends to do the same.

Dia Mirza was the first to take on the challenge, and nominated Faye DSouza, Alia Bhatt, and Shabana Azmi to take it further.

Challenges of the same nature have been prevalent on social media such as the highly popular #alsIceBucketChallenge which gathered global attention and participation in an extremely short period of time.

Dia Mirza holds the title of Miss Asia Pacific 2000, and has primarily worked in Bollywood. She married her long time business partner Sahil Sangha on October 18, 2014. The two separated in August 2019.
