The Venice Film Festival is going to get a Marathi treatment this year. Naturally, the question which will now arise in your minds is how ? Well, Marathi film ‘The Disciple’, is under the competition section at the 77th Edition of the Festival this year. National-Award winner, Chaitanya Tamhane is the director of the film.

On the other hand, Ivan Ayr’s ‘Meel Patthar (Milestone), will compete in the Horizons section at the festival.

While, many festivals are cancelled because of the pandemic this year, it’ll be the first festival to be held physically. The dates for the same are from September 2 to September 12.

At the Venice Film Festival, there are two sections, Competition and Horizon. Under competition, 20 feature films from across the world compete with each other. While, Horizons is for those international films which showcase, new aesthetic and expressive trends in world cinema.

‘The Disciple’ is a 127 minute long film and stars  Modak, Arun Dravid, Sumitra Bhave and Kiran Yadnyopavit. Zoo Entertainment Pvt. Ltd. is its producer. It is the second time, the film’s director, Chaitanya Tamhane is going to the Venice Film Festival.

In 2014, his film ‘Court’ won the Best Film – Orizzonti and Lion of the Future award. It was also a recipient of National Film Award For Best Feature Film in 2015, to further add to its achievements, it was also India’s offical entry for Oscars 2016 as the Best Foreign Film.

‘Meel Patthar (Milestone)’ is a 98 minute long film. It stars Surinder Vicky and Lakshvir Saran. Even, Ayr is not new to Venice. His Netflix crime-drama, ‘Soni’, had premiered at the Horizons section of the 75the Venice Film Festival. The film had received rave reviews.

Meanwhile, Cate Blanchett is the president of the main competition jury this year.
