Dostana (2008) touched on topic that was unexplored in Bollywood at the time it’s release – Homosexuality. A decade after his trendsetting romcom, Dostana, it’s much-anticipated sequel is finally getting ready to roll.
Producer Karan Johar who wasn’t greenlighting Part 2 because he wasn’t happy with the script, has finally zeroed in on an interesting idea that he likes. “The script is currently being developed and should be locked by the end of the month. The film is expected to go on the floors early next year,” informs a source close to the development.
John Abhram, Abhishek Bachchan and Priyanka Chopra were the cast of Dostana, but for the sequel Karan has decided to have a new star cast. “Karan wants to cast two new actors in the film,” confides the source. Meanwhile, his ‘Desi Girl’ is a big name in the West today but even Priyanka isn’t expected to return to the franchise. “There will be a girl to complete the triangle and she will be a Bollywood A-lister but it won’t be Priyanka reprising her role,” adds the source.
For Dostana, Aishwarya Rai was originally offered the lead role, but she refused it because she did not want to end up with another man in her first film with her husband (Bachchan) after their marriage. After Dostana’s release, she regretted the decision. Saif Ali Khan refused the role of Kunal because he was uncomfortable with a husband and wife (Bachchan and Rai) playing the other two leads. In early April 2008, Shilpa Shetty was signed for a special appearance in one of the film’s songs.
Bachchan said that Sam was his most difficult character to play, and he worked hard on his gestures and mannerisms: “I had to work very hard to portray a straight man acting gay. It could easily have gone over-board. I wanted to avoid making the character caricatural. Barring one portion … we kept it controlled.” Bachchan and Abraham, who had gained weight for their earlier films, had to lose the weight and become more muscular.
The 2008 film which was shot in Miami, was directed by Tarun Mansukhani but Karan has yet to decide who will helm Dostana 2.
