The Bimal Roy Foundation instituted 22 years ago in his name rewards the unsung hero of the film industry. This year the committee has decided to honour Farooque Shaikh and Asha Parekh, at a special function.

The event has been organized to commemorate the director’s 52nd death anniversary on January 8. The ceremony will take place at Savarkar Hall, Shivaji Park.

Late actor Farooque Shaikh will be the first to receive this honour after death. Roy’s daughter Rinki Roy Bhattacharya said, “We have selected Farooque Shaikh for this distinction because he was a distinguished artiste who truly deserves it. As soon as somebody suggested his name, our jury made a unanimous decision to recognize Shaikh’s phenomenal body of work. Would you believe it, he never received an award despite all those wonderful movies from Garm Hava, Gaman, Noorie, Chashme Buddoor, Katha, Umrao Jaan, and Bazaar. His performance in the parting scene in Bazaar just takes your breath away. Just one national award for supporting actor for Lahore (2010) but that is all.”

Jackie Shroff, Ananth Mahadevan, Paresh Rawal, and Amit Rai will also be receiving awards. Veteran artistes Sulochanaji, Kamini Kaushal and Farida Jalal will mark their presence at the function. Popular radio jockey RJ Siddharth will host the show.

Bimal Roy was one he India’s finest directors and he has never received even a Padma award, so his family founded the memorial so that no one from the industry remains unnoticed. Some years ago, the foundation presented an award to leading make-up artiste Pandhari Juker, commonly called Pandhari Dada.
