Bollywood actor Alia Bhatt, who was last seen in Abhishek Varman directorial Kalank, has started the shooting of her next film Gangubai Kathiawadi which is being directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali.
The Gully Boy actor took to her social media account to share the news with her fans. She wrote, “Look what Santa gave me this year” and shared a photo of a nameplate that read Gungubai with a logo of Bhansali Productions on top of it.
Ajay Devgn, who will soon be seen in Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior, is also in talks with Bhansali to play a pivotal part in the film which is based on Hussain Zaidi’s book Mafia Queens of Mumbai.
The story revolves around Gangubai Kathiwadi, a brothel owner who was sold into prostitution by her husband. While Alia Bhatt will be seen playing the titular character, Devgn will be essaying the role of one of her gangsters who played a crucial role in her meteoric rise and fell in love with her.
While preparing for her role, Bhatt was reported to have taken one month special classes to learn the diction of Kathiawadi language which is a dialect of Gujarati.
Written and directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Gangubai Kathiawadi is produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Jayantilal Gada under their respective banners Bhansali Productions and Pen India Limited. The film is scheduled to be released on 11 September next year.
