The Academy award winner music maestro AR Rahman surprised his fans by revealing the trailer of Harmony, on the eve of India’s 71st Independence Day. It’s a new series that will explore Indian music – exploring rare sounds, musical instruments and discovering lesser-known aspects about India’s musical heritage. Rahman has travelled to Kerala, Maharashtra, Manipur and Sikkim for the show.
“Music is universal, indefinable and infinite. It is a feeling, a moment, an expression. It is HARMONY,” he wrote on his Facebook page while sharing the trailer.
“I am always inquisitive about unexplored things which have a deep history and legacy,” he says in the trailer.
The five-part series is available on Amazon Prime, and each episode is about 45 minutes. The description of Harmony on the video-streaming platform reads:
“Harmony with A.R Rahman’ is a curated exploration of the past and future of Indian music through the eyes of A. R. Rahman. India’s rich musical heritage is viewed through the prism of four specially curated instruments and vocal traditions, selected in order to represent the geographic and historic diversity of the country. The series will examine the traditions, the musicians and the locations.”
In the beginning of the first episode, Rahman explains that they will be experimenting with different forms of percussion, and quite soon we are introduced to percussionist Sajith Vijayan, who plays an ancient musical instrument called Mizhavu. Mizhavu is a pot-shaped copper drum that is usually played during Koodiyattam and Koothu, art forms prevalent in parts of Kerala.
