“With great power comes great responsibility”, this quote from Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man never felt more relatable. It’ll be more relatable for you if you are J.K. Rowling. Her recent comments about the transgenders have received ire from her fans and public. People have called her comments as ‘anti-transgender’ and even called her a ‘transphobe’.

Harry Potter fans expressed their shock regarding the incident on Twitter, with several saying that they have lost faith in Rowling and her books. In this ongoing issue, Harry Potter aka actor Daniel Radcliffe have come out with a long statement.

In his statement, the actor says :

“Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people and goes against all advice given by professional health care associations who have far more expertise on this subject matter than either Jo or I”.

He further mentioned how 78% of non binary youth and transgender are subject to discrimination. Urging people to stop this, he demanded people to help them instead of spreading hatred and invalidating them.

The British actor, considered the hurt caused to Harry Potter fans by Rowling’s comments and apologized to them in his statement. He said-

“To all the people who now feel that their experience of the books has been tarnished or diminished, I am deeply sorry for the pain these comments have caused you. I really hope that you don’t entirely lose what was valuable in these stories to you.”

He further said that if the books taught anything to the fans, then that is between them and the book they read. Radcliffe also hoped that Rowling’s comments would not disregard their learnings from her books.

Lastly, he said there is no fight between him and Rowling. His statement is issued because he felt compelled to say something.
