List of highest grossing Kannada movies of all time : K.G.F: Chapter 1, Kirik Party and more

Kannada cinema has had a slow, but steady progress during the 10s decade. With the disadvantage of regional language and not as popular as Malayalam or Telugu cinema, it has taken its time to reach a wider audience. However, it seems like the time has arrived that people started giving attention to Kannada movies because the products are not only artistic, but they’re also very entertaining. 

This is the list of highest grossing Kannada movies: 

K.G.F: Chapter 1, 2018

Directed by Prashanth Neel, and starring Yash in the lead role, K.G.F: Chapter 1 was a period action drama, about Raja Krishnappa Bairya who is born and raised in poverty and arrives in Bombay to fulfill the desire of his dying mother. The critics praised the movie for its cinematography and score, while the audience were wowed by its storytelling. The movie outperformed its competition at the box office and grossed 250 crores. The shooting for its sequel began in 2019, and the trailer is scheduled to be released soon.

Raajakumara, 2017

Raajakumara starred Puneeth Rajkumar and was directed by Santosh Ananddram. The plot of the movie was very simple; it concerned a man who wants to succeed in life without giving up his principles. The critics praised the storyline, and Puneeth’s performance, while the audience was enraptured by its action filled story. The movie was a success and gained 90 crores at the box office.

Kurukshetra, 2019

This historical epic was a retelling of Mahabharata, but from the point of view of Duryodhana, who was a Kaurava king. The movie was directed by Naganna and starred Darshan Thoogudeep in the lead role. The audiences loved the grandness of its scale and praised Darshan’s performance as well. The movie made a healthy 90 crores at the box office.

The Villain, 2018

A modern day retelling of the relationship between Lord Rama and the antagonist, Raavan, The Villain was a fast paced action thriller directed by Prem. It starred Shivarajkumar, Sudeep and Amy Jackson in the lead roles. The Villain’s storyline captured the interest of many people, and it was a box office success, with 52.5 crores across board.

Kirik Party, 2016

A campus comedy with romantic and action elements, Kirik Party was directed by Rishab Shetty from a story given to him by Raskhit Shetty who also stars as the lead in the movie. Kirik Party was an instant hit with the young audience, and has already spawned a remake in Telugu language. The movie grossed 50 crores at the box office, against a budget of 4 crores, thus coming out as a blockbuster.

Mr. and Mrs. Ramachari, 2014

This romantic comedy action movie was directed by Santosh Ananddram and starred Yash and Radhika Pandit. The critics applauded the movie’s mature perspective toward modern relationships and praised Yash and Radhika’s performances. Audiences fell in love with the on-screen couple and made the movie a super hit, with a gross of 50 crores at the box office.

Mungaru Male, 2006

A romantic, musical drama set during the monsoon season, Mungaru Male starred Yogaraj Bhat and Preetam Gubbi in the lead roles. Admired for its music and the chemistry between the leads, the movie was a smash hit at the box office, with a gross of 45 crores.

Yajamana, 2019

Darshan starred in this masala action movie, which was directed by V. Harikrishna. The movie’s plot revolves around Krishna, who butts heads with a gangster, Devi, when he realizes that Devi plans to plunder the oil resources of his village. The movie was an action filled extravaganza. The audience enjoyed it a lot, and caused it to gross 50 crores at the box office.

Doddmane Hudga, 2016

Directed by Duniya Soori and starring Puneeth Rajkumar and Radhika Pandit, Doddmane Hudga was the story of Surya (Puneeeth Rajkumar) who returns to his hometown to fight with a criminal who is threatening his family. The movie supplied with ample amount of entertainment to the audience and received 40 crores at the box office, thus being tagged a hit.

Krantiveera Sangolli Rayanna, 2012

An epic historical movie about Sangolli Rayanna, Krantiveera Sangolli Rayanna was directed by Naganna with Darshan in the lead role. It was praised for its visuals and action set pieces and made 65 crores at the box office with the production cost of 35 crores.

Uppi 2, 2015

A psychological thriller with a complicated plot, Uppi 2 was directed by Upendra, and starred him in the lead role, with Kristina Akheeva. And even though the critics were doubtful about the strange script, the audiences loved the movie and helped it become a hit at the box office with a gross of 40 crores.
