A still from Anwar

In an earlier dream sequence of Krishna and Meera, Mehru is always seen running away from Anwar. The story uses metaphors for religion, death, and love. And this dream sequence is the best part of this movie as it concludes the story with a deeper meaning. Krishna and Meera are often a symbolism for the unconditional love which happens only with the soul and is rare in itself. The story of Meera and her life justifies this unconditional love but in the film, our lead characters are yet to experience this unconditional love and they seem to experience it after they die.

As love is portrayed in mainstream movies, the reality is exactly opposite and we see it when Anwar thinks Mehru will be the love of his life but she is practical and materialistic. Hence, she is not yet aware and hence she’s always running away from him. Anwar also is not Krishna yet, as he gets jealous and angry and gives away the whereabouts of Mehru and Udit, which becomes the reason for their deaths. Both of them become victims of religious hate/fear. Hate kills love. Religion is also materialistic and can’t love unconditionally.

A still from Anwar

In the end, though, Mehru and Anwar are souls, they finally see each other. At the end sequence, Mehru/Meera stops running. She says I know who you’re. You’re Anwar, who cried like a child seeing a dead butterfly and who’s full of love. Finally, she sees love. And in the end, their souls embrace or it can just be imagination, no one never knows. But this sequence is quite metaphorical to the story of Krishna and Meera and hence this sequence is added in the film.

The film Anwar is another piece of art that should be appreciated for its deeper meaning into the story of individuals dealing with the complex nature of life.

Directed by Manish Jha, the film stars Siddharth Koirala, Nauheed Cyrusi, Manisha Koirala, Rajpal Yadav, Vijay Raaz, and Hiten Tejwani. If you haven’t watched the film, then definitely watch this underrated piece of art.
