A still from Dev D

Without highlighting any gender, here’s an example of two different sides of Acceptance and how music composition plays an important role in portraying these two sides in a film. The first frame is the last meet of Dev (Abhay Deol) and Paro (Mahie Gill) before they part ways and in the deep cut, the song ‘Mahi Menu Nahi Karna Pyar’ starts playing in a soft tone from the perspective of Paro as she decides to accept the reality without hiding her true feelings.

A scene from Dev D

She portrays the one side of acceptance where a person decides to move on and is true to their feelings and hence the music here from Paro’s perspective is composed in a sad tone while she’s looking very upset in a mirror scene which means she’s confronting herself and later decides to move on.

Moving on to the other side, from the perspective of Dev who’s trying to be pretty cool about him parting ways with Paro and his the same song playing in pop mode tries to define his mood which he uses to hide his true feelings.

Dev portrays the other side of acceptance where people are masters at hiding their true emotions but not for very long as they suffer later due to it. And that is what we actually see further in Dev’s story. This film, though being an adaptation, is a great work due to its modern concept.
