The upcoming edition of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) will be screening three classic films from silent era. The films will be accompanied by a master pianist performing live during the movie.

Today, films have become an inextricable part of our lives so much so that it is difficult for the new generation to imagine the medium in a different form. As we all know films were not always audio-visual medium.

In its nascent stage the art of films was conceptualized as a series of images which would convey a narrative without any aural sensation. In order to heighten the impact of such films special live music would be performed by either a solo musician or a collective group under the direction of a composer.

With the advent of sound films this feature of the film viewing experience soon faded out. This Golden Jubilee edition of IFFI has a specially curated section which pays tribute to this lost form of film viewing where three classics by three master filmmakers will be showcased.

The films under this section are:

  •  Battleship Potemkin by Russian master filmmaker and pioneer of montage editing Sergei M. Eisenstein
  •  Pandora’s Box by German Expressionist Master G.W. Pabst
  • Blackmail by master of suspense and British Filmmaker, Alfred Hitchcock

2019 marks the 50th year of IFFI, which is considered as India’s most prestigious film festival and is often counted amongst one of the earliest film festivals of the Asian continent.

The golden jubilee edition of the festival will be held from 20 November to 28 November in Goa and will witness over 200 best films from 76 countries, 26 feature films and 15 non feature films in Indian panorama section and around 10,000 people and film lovers are expected to participate in the golden jubilee edition.

As IFFI is celebrating its golden jubilee edition, 12 prominent films in different languages that have completed 50 years in 2019, are also going to be showcased.
